Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Salvation?

The Bible states: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Salvation is the act by which Jesus rescues us from the punishment of sin and brokenness, here during our life on earth and for all eternity.

Salvation is the Christ-initiated act of leaving our former lives behind and choosing to follow Him with the whole of our lives. We believe that Christ offers forgiveness to all who ask for it sincerely, no matter how serious the sin! We also believe that he initiates the spiritual process by calling us His children, being intimately involved in our lives, and showering his love upon us, even in the times we do not reciprocate.
Often, you might hear about people making a salvation prayer or getting re-baptized to mark this faith moment! However, many people have gone to church their whole lives and haven’t had that sort of event. None of this emphasizes or negates the power of salvation, however it occurred in your life. In addition, we are all on a faith journey and each of us is in a different place with different experiences. We are saved when we accept the grace and forgiveness of Jesus and choose to follow Him, at which point we have the responsibility of continuing to follow Him on a daily basis!

What Is a Presbyterian?

The first thing to make clear is that Presbyterians are Christians — part of the Church in the world that Christ has drawn together! This includes Christians in many denominations, with each Church confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord. The Presbyterian Church is a protestant denomination that espouses Reformed theology.

The Presbyterian denomination was formulated in the 16th & 17th centuries in Scotland, although its roots go back even further into history. The church was organized around a unique form of church government in which Elders (in Greek, presbyters) lead the church. This was done in opposition to unilateral church leadership, in which a bishop or priest would have absolute authority. This form of church government provides a great system of checks and balances through which discerning spiritual leader work alongside the Pastor(s) to do the work of the church.
Presbyterian theology is Reformed, and typically emphasizes the sovereignty of God (i.e. God is in charge), the authority of the Scriptures (i.e. the Bible tells us how we ought to live), and necessity of grace through faith in Christ (i.e. we cannot save ourselves on our power or merit).

What Is the Difference Between the Worship Services?

We have two worship services at First Pres. In each service, we give our God-honoring best to make sure that it’s an engaging, well-implementing opportunity for our people to connect with God. Both services are an hour long with live music (in different styles) and live preaching from our Lead Pastor.

The 9:00 service is our INFORMAL worship gathering. People start showing up at about quarter to 9 to grab a cup of coffee and connect with one another. We sit around tables in the fellowship hall and drink our coffee, while people come dressed more casually. The atmosphere of the service is very relaxed, organic, and intimate. The music in the Informal service is led by the praise band and includes more contemporary praise songs. We spend a good chunk of time in community prayer led by the pastor, with the congregation sharing prayer concerns. We also have communion following the sermon every week in this service.
The 11:00 service is our TRADITIONAL worship gathering in the Sanctuary. This service features classic church music led by our organist, pianist and choir, with the congregation singing along using the hymnal. The sanctuary has pews and the pastor(s) and choir wear robes (except in summer!) It’s a traditional worship offering that is very familiar to many who have attended church in the past. The sanctuary is always beautifully decorated and has stained glass all over the walls, adding to the sanctity of this space. We have communion on the 1st Sunday of every month in this service.

WHERE DO I PARK?

Our parking lot is across the street from the main church building, on 15th Street. We have designated handicap parking behind the Fellowship Hall in the small lot that connects 14th & 15th St.

WHAT IS THERE FOR MY KIDS?

Our Family Ministry program is unique in that our goal is to connect the whole family together, rather than spread everyone out across the campus for separate programs. If you have kids from ages 4 to 18, just come on up to the Big Room (2nd floor) on a Sunday morning during the 10:00am Discipleship Hour and we’ll get you situated from there. We have childcare available for kids 3 and under in the Fellowship Hall.

HOW LONG HAS THE CHURCH BEEN AROUND?

First Presbyterian Church was the first church in Manatee County, starting back in 1886, led by the vision of some fine folks who saw a need for this church in the communty. We have a rich history that has provided an amazing foundation for over 130 years, and we are still striving to bring Christ’s light to a world in need.

WHAT DENOMINATION IS THE CHURCH?

First Presbyterian Church belongs to the Presbyterian Church USA, which is a Christian denomination that was born during the Protestant movement of the Reformation. While each Christian denomination has its unique approach to ministry, the PC(USA) offers our church the great freedom to exercise our Christ-centered, Biblically-guided, evangelical approach to ministry.

HOW DO I JOIN THE CHURCH?

We have two membership classes during the year, usually right before Christmas and Easter. However, in reality, we strive more for active participation and engagement than membership. So, come worship, grow and serve with us, get plugged in and get to know us, and we’ll take care of the membership aspect later. Joining the church is done by profession of faith (and baptism, when it has never been done before), re-affirmation of faith, or by letter of transfer from another church.

DO YOU HELP PEOPLE WITH SPECIFIC NEEDS?

We strive to serve the needs of our community to the best of our ability and within a strong network of churches and para-church organizations. Our current programs are food-based, with the Food Pantry open twice a week and monthly Koinonia lunches. Through these programs, we also offer personable interaction and prayer when it is requested. Unfortunately, we are not able to address any needs outside of the food services we offer. If you have needs that go beyond food, please contact Manatee Religious Services at (941) 752-4271

DO I HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO FULLY PARTICIPATE?

Absolutely not! Everything we do is open to everyone, at whatever step of the faith journey you are on. We strive to meet you right where you are at, and we want to walk alongside you in your unique faith journey. Communion is open to members, non-members, and guests alike, who profess faith in Jesus Christ.

CAN I GET MARRIED AT THE CHURCH?

Yes…if you would like for our Pastor to officiate your Christian wedding at the church, please contact the church office to get the details and the fee schedule.

CAN I HAVE A FUNERAL AT THE CHURCH?

Yes…if you would like for our Pastor to preside over a funeral (a.k.a. Service of Witness to the Resurrection) please contact the church office to get the details and the fee schedule.

CAN I HAVE A SPECIAL EVENT AT THE CHURCH?

Possibly, but only at the discretion of our staff and Session. When it comes to having the community use our building, we strive to be in partnership with organizations and people who share our values. It can take a while for our Session to evaluate and approve outside events, so please contact the church office for a Facility Use Request as early as possible.

CAN I MEET THE PASTOR?

Sure! While our pastors and staff maintain a very busy day-to-day schedule, we also love meeting people and getting to know them. If you would like to meet with the pastor, simply call the church office to schedule an appointment.

What Happens When I Give?

Here are First Pres, we believe everyone’s time, talent and financial resources are God-given gifts given to each person for the building up of the Kingdom. While money is no one’s favorite subject at church, finances are necessary to keep our ministries and missions going strong.
The money collected in the offering plates on Sunday mornings, along with all other pledges and gifts, goes into our General Fund unless designated otherwise. We set our annual mission and ministry goals (resourced by the church budget) based on anticipated giving.
We have many ways to give…including online, IRA distributions, stock transfers, and more. If you would like to know more about how to give, contact us
